The diagram below is of the HYBACS Process showing two treatment stages in series; the first stage contains fixed biomass and the second stage contains suspended biomass in the form of activated sludge. The two stages interact to promote the growth and retention of Bacillius ssp in the biomass.
The diagram also shows two recycle streams, namely an internal recycle and a sludge recycle. When treating municipal sewage, the flow rate of each recycle stream is equal to about 0.5Q, where Q is the flow rate of the wastewater.
