The diagram below is of the HYBACS Process showing two treatment stages in series; the first stage contains attached biomass and the second stage contains suspended biomass in the form of activated sludge. The two stages interact to promote the growth and retention of a highly active biomass in the first stage.
The diagram also shows two recycle streams, namely an internal recycle and a sludge recycle. When treating municipal sewage, the flow rate of each recycle stream is equal to about 1Q, where Q is the flow rate of the wastewater.
